About the Event

Hey Learning Tribe! We've put together our first not-a-book-club, club. Welcome to the Literary Salon.

The plan: We’ll pick a topic each month and a suggested book to frame the conversation...

FAQ: Don’t have time to read the book? Come anyway! Have a different book or other work to suggest on the evening's subject? Bring it along and share it with the group! Curious but not sure if this is your thing? That’s cool - grab a drink (or not) and a seat on the sofa. Not sure if you should come alone? Please do! - you won’t be the only one.

Salon topic 1 (September 21st): In honor of the literary salons of the 18th century enlightenment, we’ll kick off with a discussion on how the past can inform the present, with a little help from the father of the French enlightenment - Voltaire ... We live in an age of socioeconomic divide, political corruption, and intolerance in many forms. We aren’t the first...

Recommended book: Candide by Voltaire (it’s very short (about 120 pages) and very entertaining) ... a political and social allegory of its time. It’s also available free online (and if 120 pages are too much for your schedule this month - there are Cliffs Notes online as well! No judgment 😊)

Plan for the evening:

We’ll kick off with a fun and low key icebreaker ... and then ask for top-of-mind thoughts on the book or anything related to the evening’s subject to start the conversation...This being the first salon evening, we’ll also reserve some time to discuss the shape of future salon gatherings, get input from everyone on what you’d like this group to be, and suggest future topics...

Conversation ground rules: respect, kindness, and no bad ideas.

Can't make this one but interested in joining the salon? Please let us know!
